2025-11-03 Durga’s Story – Durga, whose name means “Tough Going,” is the goddess you call on in the most difficult of circumstances, in the times of greatest urgency and need. Her name also means moving in little bits; go little by little, bit by bit, moment by moment; to break into little pieces and make progress in small successes and incremental victories. Listen to Durga’s story and embody qualities of Durga in an upper body and core strength focused practice of Chaturanga Dandasana progressions (pushups, falling/catching yourself on your hands, hopping like a crocodile etc) and step-by-step work into the arm balance of Eka Pada Koundinyasana II (Koundinya’s Pose, aka Flying Splits). 2025-10-31 Narasimha’s Story & Pose – Explore the parallel myths of the Kali’s Rakta Bija story (in our previous class “Feed Your Demons”) with the story of Narasimha; in which Vishnu emerges as the ferocious “Man Lion” to address another demon. Both tell stories of ferocity and anger teetering on the edge of destructive rage, and offer strategies and insights of deeper truths of how we might navigate these intense emotions and experiences without ourselves becoming demonic. Class begins with story time and reflection, builds heat through sun salutations of increasing tempo, fierce strength in handstands and challenging transitions between standing poses, with deepening hip openers and variations of Simhasana. Props: mat, wall, blanket. Read more

2025-10-30 Feed Your Demons – Halloween tells the story of feeding (your) demons (cause fed demons are better than hungry demons), told through the act of giving treats to masked children who come to your door to demand treats with a thinly veiled threat of “or else you will be tricked,” so that all ghosts and monsters and princesses leave happy with food (if candy counts as food) and go on their way. We juxtapose Halloween to the Kali myth of Rakta Bija, “Blood Seed,” a story of assimilation and transmutation of the demonic as the ferocious process of intervention into injustice (imbalance, inequality), in a yoga practice of progressively asymmetrical poses and transitions to challenge your ability to bring balance/integrity/alignment to imbalance. Props: mat, wall, 3 blankets. Read more

2025-10-29 Be a Deeply Engaged Person – Explore the archetype of the hero as a deeply engaged person, aka a yogi, as one who lives in the questions of mythic consciousness, pursues deeper truths, and skillfully intervenes in crisis to create order, again and again and again… Begin with conversation and centering, then warm up and embody your heroic heart in a focused #legday practice featuring variations of Virasana (Hero’s Pose), Utkatasana (Fierce Pose), Virabhadrasana I and II (Warrior Poses).
